Can virtual controllers be safe?

The abstraction of controllers to virtual controllers is playing an increasingly important role in the course of digitalization. However, one aspect is critical: the control of potentially dangerous machines and systems. Can virtual PLCs also be used for this?

With the consistent abstraction of control technology, machine and plant builders as well as operators of such systems can achieve considerable savings - from acquisition to commissioning, expansion, maintenance and decommissioning. In the case of virtual controllers based on container or hypervisor technologies, only the software determines the function. The hardware provides the abstracted substructure for it. This makes it easy to realize modern control architectures with security-by-design and dynamic microservices, because dependence on specific devices has been overcome. But what about functionally secure applications?
